As a mother of two daughters, ages, 24 and 21, I realize the importance of raising them to be Pro-life. I experienced the late 80’s and early 90’s as a teenager. I must admit that pro-life, pro-choice, nor abortion was even discussed in my southern Baptist church or in my family. This is a shame.
It’s never too early or too late to teach our children to be pro-life. For toddlers: take their ultrasound photo and frame it with the verse of Jeremiah 1:5, “Before you were born, I knew you”. Read bible stories of creation. Sing “He's got the whole world in His hands”. Teach how babies start so small that we can’t even see them. For elementary school age: read Before you were born, by Joan Lowery Nixon. Read Horton Hears a Who, by Dr. Seuss. Begin to teach and help them memorize verses such as Psalm 139:14, “Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it”. Teach your children how unique and wonderfully made they are. Begin showing and teaching them facts of how babies develop and their many stages in their mother’s womb.
For middle school age: Begin teaching about God’s jealous love for the preborn. Teach them Genesis 1:27 “And God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” . Another verse to teach is, Psalm 127:3 “Behold children are a gift of the Lord; the fruit of the womb is a reward.” Have them read Diary of an Unborn Child written by Michele DuVal Aiello . When my daughters were in the fifth grade, I learned they were being told things from their school mates about kissing, hugging, sex and having other kids show them pictures of naked people on their phones. I realized that even though I wasn’t ready to teach them adult things, they were already learning. I decided to purchase “Passport to Purity” and plan a weekend with each of them. My girls have forever cherished and remembered the things we learned that weekend.
For Jr. High age: Introduce the issue of abortion and ways to help babies. Teach them Proverbs 24:11-12 “Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter. If you say, "But we knew nothing about this," does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who guards your life know it? Will he not repay each person according to what he has done?”
For high school ages: Prepare them… Consider Camp Joshua in Arkansas. Joshua is a three-day or weekend camp designed to train high school students to be pro-life leaders now and in the future. It covers all the basics of the pro-life issues in classes and hands-on workshops. Check out their website, http://www.campjoshuaar.org.
For college ages: Encourage them to join or start a Students for Life on their college campus. To learn more about this go to http://studentsforlife.org. Parents, please do not ignore this subject with your children. Teach them, guide them and encourage them to speak up.
